Common questions

How much do I repay on my student loan?

9% of everything you earn above the plan threshold: £25,000 on Plan 5, £26,900 on Plan 1, £29,385 on Plan 2 and £33,795 on Plan 4 in Scotland. A postgraduate loan is 6% above £21,000.

What if I have both an undergraduate and a postgraduate loan?

They are separate deductions from the same pay. You repay 9% above your undergraduate threshold and 6% above the postgraduate threshold at the same time, so the total is higher than either alone.

Is a student loan repayment taken before or after tax?

After. Income tax and National Insurance come off first, then the loan repayment is taken through payroll on the same gross pay. It does not reduce your tax.

When is a student loan written off?

Plan 5 is written off 40 years after the April you were first due to repay, Plan 2 after 30 years, and Plan 1 and Plan 4 after 25 years. Many people never clear the balance, so the monthly cost matters more than the total owed.
